Brief Biographical Sketch:

My name is Isaiah, and I am a junior at Northwestern with a special interest in Linguistics. I also study Psychology and Gender/Sexuality Studies. I love getting involved on campus with educational access programs to help low-income, first-generation students like me. I plan on going to graduate school to study Sociolinguistics and psycholinguistics and how it relates to speech stereotypes

H677: Media and the Mind: How RuPaul's Drag Race Impacted the Language Inventory of Gay and Straight Viewers in Splash Spring 2024 (May. 25, 2024)
The media we consume on a daily basis impacts how we perceive certain groups and the language we use. Tracing language use thus speaks to our ideologies we have about others. In this class, we will analyze how RuPaul's Drag Race has impacted both the language we use as well as our ideologies about queer people.

You ever noticed the strange ways gay people use language? What does slaying the house down boots really mean? Gay People in a Straight World looks into queer linguistics and the language used to communicate with each other as well as how straight people use language to speak to us. If you're interested in learning about both social and linguistic fields, this class is for you, queer or straight. We will cover research findings in phonetics and pragmatics as they relate to queer language as well as current real-world examples of popular gay language. No prior experience with linguistics is necessary.
