S380: A study of emergence in Splash 2018 (Apr. 07, 2018)
The economist Jeffery Goldstein defined emergence as "the arising of novel and coherent structures, patterns and properties during the process of self-organization in complex systems". In this class, we shall look at examples of complex behavior arising from a collection of simple entities, and a glance at the tools we can use to study this behavior. Some particular examples of interest will be: - collections of atoms at extremely low temperatures. - colonies of plants and animals. - crowds of people. - consciousness?
