S58: Symmetry and Conservation in Classical Mechanics in Splash 2011 (Apr. 02, 2011)
Classical mechanics is much more than $$F=ma$$. The properties of conservation of linear momentum, angular momentum, and energy may seem like magic but are in fact deeply tied to the symmetries of the physical systems that express them. This result is known as Noether's theorem. We will cover the basic philosophy and equations of the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formulations of classical mechanics (you may have already heard of the Principle of Least Action) to hopefully arrive at a glimpse of the link between symmetry and conserved quantities.
